Risks and Complications

Once the decision has been made to proceed with YAG laser ablation, the patient will sign an informed consent in which the risks and benefits of this surgery are discussed. Certainly, no surgery carries with it a 100% success rate, but modern floater ablation in uncomplicated cases has a success rate which approaches 92%. With that in mind, the following is an extensive list of risks which occur rarely and include but are not limited to:

• Bleeding and infection, which can occur with any surgery
• Increased intraocular pressure
• Untreatable floaters or floater remnants that maybe too small or too close to the retina
• Loss of vision or loss of the eye
• Retinal or lens burn
• Detachment of the retina
• Need for additional surgery if other problems occur
• Disappointing or less than optimal visual results due to pre-existing or subsequently occurring conditions such as macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy
